It's no secret that Indonesia's football team is bad. Let's face it. It's almost embarrassing.
How many times do you hear people say: “out of 230 million of people, we could not even find 11 men who can play football?”
Well guess what.
China has the same problem. Are you watching the olympics and being amazed by how the Chinese athletes are literally mining the gold medals? Oh yes. But not in football.
Football is one sport that is popular in China but also frustrates them. They just can't get their team off the ground. Their other athletes may dominates the world arena, but their football team is not among them.
If Indonesia can't find good players among 230 million, China can't find them in 1.3 billion.
Why? They certainly have the money, so that can't be the main reason. Furthermore, their women's team did better in the olympics despite the fact that the women players are paid a hundredth or less than the men's.
So what's the problem?
Here's what we read in the paper:
“Many Chinese sports analysts and scholars point to endemic corruption within the (Chinese football) association as one root cause of the sport's ill.”
Hmm... Sounds familiar.
Apparently, when it comes to football, we don't walk alone.

Competition is the main tool to make good national team. When corruption breaks into China League, then their football are broken already.

Did you really think that you walked alone in the corruption ranks?
Corruption is the root of all evil, don't they say? And corruption is part of the problem.
The other part is setting up the infrastructure such as the necessary football academies and getting youngsters involved at an early age and then progressing them through the ranks.
This requires not only money but expertise. Yet, on the money front anything that gets syphoned off means that it is likely to come from the junior development budget and not from the senior teams.
My point I guess is that corruption plays a primary role. However, corruption is not the only problem as even if there was no corruption then for Indonesia it is also necessary to develop the local expertise that is going to shepherd the young talent into a formidable national team and this does not exist by my reckoning either.

We missed the fact that Nigerian football team did really well in the Olympics.
Nigeria is also a country struggling with corruption, and yet their footballers managed to shine.
You are right: Corruption is not the only problem.
i don't think corruption is the root of all EVIL for everything.
china has 200,000 basketball players in ONE province - 60,000 courts that is. And they can't even get to the finals.
some ppl are good in some things and not others, which makes olympics interesting.
if it's only the law of large numbers, in 50 years time, the olympics will be an all China team.

Bro, among 230 million, there are (maybe) over 40 million babies under 10 years old, some million under 15, probably hundreds of millions of people above 35 years old. Dont forget, half of our population is ....female.
Let's also count the mentaly disturbed people, disabled, shemale, etc.
Probably, we'll only deal with less than 30 million now...hahaha.
Corruption is everywhere. Indonesia PSSI is way 'richer' than Kamerun's or Nigeria's. Probably even Tunisia.
